Handy hints for Autumn Racing season

Written by Daisy Milsom

The Autumn racing season is underway so we thought we would get the do’s and don’ts from WA Country Cups Fashion on the Field Ambassador Abbey Gelmi to keep you all in the know!

Abbey says she is lucking enough to spend most of her weekends at the tracks so she definitely has a few tips she can share to help you have the best time.

“Firstly, know the fashion conventions for each racing season. For autumn, it’s enclosed shoes, felt hats, longer hemlines and heavier fabrics. Whereas spring is when florals, lace and straw really shine. I love being a little adventurous with my racing style. Day to day I’m very much a jeans and tee kinda girl, but at the races I go all out. Organisation is key and its doesn’t have to be expensive! I’ve worn some beautiful headpieces worth hundreds of dollars, but I’ve also ducked down to spotlight to get some felt ribbon (around $10) to match my dress and styled a low ponytail, it’s effortless and classic. Find what works for you and rock it!”

“Choosing the right shoes is a day maker or breaker. If you’re going to be standing all day on grass, maybe leave the sky high stilettos at home. Not only will your heels look worse for wear after a day of sinking into the green, but also the pain after a long day in patient points is very real. You want to be watching the races not worrying about your feet!”

I asked Abbey what are the must haves for a race day clutch. She said a touch up kit is vital!

“In my clutch I always have a little touch up kit (small concealer, lipstick etc), a band aid (just in case), some sort of comb (racetracks can be pretty windy so it’s handy to tame the mane) and of course the form guide with my best bets circled ready to go”.

Abbey encouraged the men of WA to get involved in the festivities.

“For the gents - get involved in the fashion too. I’m always so impressed at how many guys put the effort in with a pocket square or bold shirt. You’ll get extra points with your partner if you just happen to pick a tie that matches her dress and always wear a tie, it finishes the look!”

“There are so many wonderful aspects to country racing so my biggest ‘must-do’ is to explore all that’s on offer on race day. Most tracks have publicly accessible stables so you can go and have a closer look at the beautiful horses in the yard too. Place a bet and cheer it home! If you’re like me and enjoy a bit of a dabble, do your homework on the form a few days before.”

If you’re new to Racing you can simply soak up the day by visiting the delicious food stalls and enjoying a drink in the sun.

“Watch the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field heats, the WA talent is INCREDIBLE and as good as I’ve seen anywhere. The outfits are amazing and it’s always good to have crowd support! More than anything - take lots of photos and enjoy the day!”

We hope Abbey’s tips and tricks will help you as much as they helped us!

Make sure you get involved in the 2018 season! The next regional heat will be run at Carnarvon Ladies day on 9 June 2018. For more info, head to the WA Country Cups website.
