First Community Members Charged Under New NSW Anti-Protest Laws

Bev smiles, Bruce Hughes and Stephanie Luke arrested for protesting at the Wilpinjong mine in April.

The three are the first to be charged under the new anti protest laws and are potentially facing a $5,000 fine and a seven year jail sentence.

The trio faced court today and pleaded not guilty, under the pretense that the prosecutors did not have enough evidence.

They were protesting the expansion of the Wilpinjong mine - claiming they'll be socially and economically isolated when it goes ahead.

Lawyers for the accused told the court police did not have enough evidence to convict their clients. The prosecution now has until June 14 to prepare its brief of evidence with the case to return to court on June 21.
