The Federal Government announced the Inland Rail Route route yesterday which is on track to go through Pittsworth and Brookstead with Toowoomba getting its share of $8.4 billion project.
However, there are claims that Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio stood to benefit personally from the inland rail project if an alternate route put forward had been approved.
The ABC has reported that Councillor Antonio personally paid nearly $5,000 dollars to have an alternate route explored. The alternate route altered the base case route near Millmerran and took the line to the very edge of a gravel quarry he owns near Millmerran.
In the interview with the ABC Councillor Antonio conceded he stood to benefit from inland rail.
The alternate route put forward by Mayor Antonio was rejected.
Transport Minister Darren Chester disagreed with suggestions there was political manipulation in the selection process.
