Traffic crashes are the single biggest killer of people aged between 16 and 24 years – that’s the frightening statistics.

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Cr Paul Antonio would like to see this turned around as we begin Road Safety Week in Queensland.

“The amount of lives lost on the roads each year is horrifying and we need to do more to change this,” Cr Antonio said.

“We lose too many people, especially young people, to road crashes every year and we must do everything we can do to improve this. It starts with every single one of us being aware of others.

“There are a number of factors why this occurs and unfortunately the biggest cause of all road fatalities in Queensland for 2017 was alcohol and drug related (26 per cent).

“These are the future leaders of our community and have so much to look forward to with their lives.

“Motorists need to think about the Fatal Five before getting behind the wheel – speeding, drink and drug driving, fatigue, inattention and wearing seat belts.

“It’s not just motorists either. We all need to speak up and remind everyone of their responsibility in promoting road safety.”

Mayor Antonio said Council had an important role to play by managing more than 6,700 kilometres of roads across our region and was committed to promoting greater safety for the community.

“Since 2011, we have been working hard as part of our Regional Road Safety Strategy to reduce the average number of fatal crashes across the region’s Council-controlled road network,” he said.

“We have seen the annual fatal accident rate reduced to 2.2 per 100,000 population. That equates to one less life lost due to a fatal traffic crash on the region’s roads each year.

“We are heading in the right direction, but we cannot relax our efforts. Later this year Council is aiming to release out 2018 Regional Road Safety Strategy.

“In addition to this, it’s important we acknowledge all the emergency services who do a fantastic job here throughout the Toowoomba Region.”
