QANTAS has announced that it will build one of the two proposed pilot training academies right here in our own backyard.

The announcement was made by QANTAS CEO Alan Joyce, at Wellcamp Airport on Thursday morning.

Toowoomba was one of nine regions short-listed for the facility, which will train up to 250 pilots a year.

The Garden City was chosen as a destination for the academy due to access to uncongested airspace, a high proportion of clear weather days per year, access to support infrastructure and ability to attract students and trainers to live in the area.

The academy site is set to  open mid next year and will create ongoing employment for up to 160 people in training and support roles, while the construction will create more than 100 direct jobs and about 300 indirect jobs.

The second location is yet to be announced.
