Next time you are travelling on Toowoomba’s public transport, stop and think about how you are sitting – if you aren’t sitting correctly you could be slapped with a $261 fine.

The Queensland Government has moved to bring in fines for public transport offences in-line with the State, this includes Toowoomba’s public transport system.

The new offence of occupying more than one seat on public transport is consistent with an existing offence in the Transport Infrastructure (Rail) Regulation 2017.

The offence is about giving Transport and Main Roads the ability to discourage inappropriate behaviour, such as passengers placing their feet on a seat, however the rules would not be enforced upon passengers who "had a reasonable excuse".

MAXIMUM PENALTY FOR USING SEATS IMPROPERLY:

  • $261 (20 penalty units)

MAXIMUM PENALTY FOR LEAVING LITTER:

  • $130 (10 penalty units)

So next time you’re using the public transport network stop and think about that piece of litter you left on the seat and definitely no taking up two seats, your bank balance may just end up hundreds of dollars lighter.
