For the sixth year in a row, Aussie Wine Month celebrates the world-class wine produced in our very own backyard.

While we wish every month could be Aussie Wine Month - it's not. So why not check out some of the best vineyards within driving distance while you still have a good excuse to "test" some of Australia's tastiest fine wines?

We've put together a list of the 5 best places close to the Darling Downs to celebrate what is possibly our favourite month - check it out!

1.  Ballandean Estate Wines

Where:  354 Sundown Rd, Ballandean

Distance:  2 hours

Located on the stunning Granite Belt Ballandean Estate Wines is the oldest winery on the Granite Belt.

The winery has been in the Cardillo and Puglisi family for over 80 years so it’s safe to say they know their stuff.

Be sure to check out and experience the award winning Barrelroom & Larder where the cuisine is sourced from within 3 hours of the restaurant for a dining experience you will never forget.

Daily tours and taste-testing on offer.

2.  Gowrie Mountain Estate - Woomba Wines

Where:  2 Warrego Highway, Kingsthorpe

Distance: 15 minutes from Toowoomba

Situated northwest of Toowoomba in the heart of the Darling Downs and only 15 minutes from Toowoomba on the Warrego Highway is where you will find Gowrie Mountain Estate.

The Newbury family have established a 32 hectare boutique award winning vineyard featuring the best unusual wines the likes of Tempranillo Gamay and Verdelho.

Their underground cellar provides an unusual venue for tasting and is a must for wine lovers – definitely not to be missed!

3.  Preston Peak Winery

Where:  430 Preston Boundary Road, Preston

Distance: 10 minute from Toowoomba

Preston Peak Winery at Preston offers not only exceptional wines both red and white but stunning scenery to go with it.

This little hidden gem is worth the short drive for a relaxing afternoon of wine, food and views to die for.

4.  Pyramids Road Wines

Where:  25 Wyberba Lane, Wyberba

Distance:  20 minutes from Stanthorpe / 1hr 59 from Toowoomba

Pyramids Road Wines is one of the unique wineries on the Granite Belt. Nestled in the foothills of Girraween National Park, the vineyard and winery produce truly hand made wines.

With a passion for fine wines Pyramids Road Wines are all hand crafted on the premises so why not make the beautiful drive to Pyramids Road Wines and tantalise your taste buds with varieties like Verdelho, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet, Mourvedre and Muscat.

It's worth the drive!

5.  Whiskey Gully Wines

Where:  Beverley Road, Sevenlea

Distance:   1 hr  51

The vineyard is established on one of the district's oldest station properties “Beverley” and the 110-year-old homestead is a fine food restaurant as well as the cellar door outlet for Whiskey Gully Wines.

Whiskey Gully Wines, at Severnlea, is a modern vineyard in Australia's Granite Belt District, producing fine wines from a variety of grapes including Shiraz, for which Australia is famous.

If you don't have the time to get to one of these amazing wineries I guess you could do what you would any other month - just drink your wine at home!
