Southern Downs locals are being reminded about the big fines that are in place for anyone caught with unregistered firearms in their possession outside of the National Gun Amnesty period.
The Federal Government has put in place the National Firearms Amnesty to allow residents to hand in their unregistered weapons from July 1 to September 30.
Anyone caught with unregistered firearms outside of the amnesty period could face fines up to $280,000, 14 years behind bars and a criminal record.
Maranoa MP David Littleproud says it is important people don’t leave handing in their guns until the last minute:
“This is an opportunity for people to get onto it straight away. I wouldn’t wait- while we have been given some time to do this, there is no decision to be made. We are not changing gun laws, we are just asking for those who have unregistered firearms to take them in.”
