A mother and her four children have escaped a house fire in Rangeville.

Emergency services say the blaze broke out just after 6 last night in the downstairs area of two-story home on South Street.

Neighbours tried desperately to help extinguish the fire before QFES arrived but the house but the downstairs area of the home been gutted.

While the family escaped without injury, the lower level of the house has been destroyed with the second level of the property receiving a lot of heat and smoke damage.

Toowoomba police Sergeant Greg Wheeler said Queensland Fire and Emergency Services had done a great job in containing the fire to the downstairs area.
