It might not be on a tartan track, but Toowoomba Region residents have the chance to register for a place in the Queen’s Baton Relay as it winds from Oakey to Toowoomba ahead of next April’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. (April 4-15)

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said Oakey and Toowoomba had been named as Australian Celebration Communities which placed them on the Queen’s Baton Relay tour.

“I encourage any interested residents to sign up for the Community Batonbearer Nomination Program for their chance to be a part of the historic event.

“Our region has a rich sporting tradition and I’m positive there will be great support for the Commonwealth Games from Toowoomba and Southern Queensland.

“I’m equally sure we will have athletes who will be competing at the elite level, along with volunteers who will be playing their role to welcome visitors and help stage a memorable spectacle for all international athletes and visitors.

“Not everyone gets the chance to pull on the green and gold and compete for their country, so being a part of the Queen’s Baton Relay is one way to be a part of a nationwide celebration ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

“Residents should ensure they register to be in with the chance to lace on the shoes to join the Queen’s Baton Relay.”

The Queen’s Baton Relay carries a message from Her Majesty The Queen via a 388-day, 230,000km tour through Commonwealth nations before arriving at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
