Police have charged a man with arson after a house was destroyed in Withcott overnight.

Officers were called to a disturbance at an address on Clive Crescent around 9:10PM, the home was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

The female occupant of the property was able to escape the blaze before she called for Emergency Services who were able to get the fire under control and stopping it from spreading.

A vehicle parked near the house was also destroyed in the fire.

A man located nearby a short time later was taken to the Toowoomba Hospital where he was treated for suspected burns to his hands and smoke inhalation but has since been discharged.

The 49-year-old Newtown man was charged with one count of arson and is expected to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court tomorrow.
