Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is planning to continue fuel reduction burns throughout the region with Cranley Bushland Park scheduled for Monday 23 July. The burn will happen in conjunction with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).

Following successful fuel reduction burns at Mt. Peel and Picnic Point, TRC Parks and Recreation Services portfolio leader Cr Joe Ramia, said a final decision to burn would be made on the morning of 23 July.

“With these sort of things, a final decision will always be made on the day itself as the weather has a major bearing on what we can and can’t do,” Cr Ramia said.

“While bushfires can be a risk at any time of year, the bushfire risk is higher for our region from the end of July to March. These early burns will help prevent loss of property and possible injury if a fire were to sweep across the area.

“The burn will take in around 45 hectares of bushland contained within the Cranley Bushland Park.

“The primary purpose of the burn is fuel reduction; however there is an added benefit as the burn will also assist Council with weed management in the park.”

Notification letters have been sent out to nearby residents, but Cr Ramia has asked all members of the public to be aware of the burn taking place.

“Council has contacted immediate neighbours to the burn, but depending on the wind speed and direction, I advise all nearby residents to be aware of smoke in the area.

“It is likely this burn will produce thick smoke and as such, residents may wish to close their windows and avoid hanging washing on the line during the initial stages.”

The burn is scheduled for Monday morning, 23 July at approximately 9.00am, depending upon weather conditions.
