There are renewed calls to take extra care at our beaches this summer across the Mid North Coast.
It comes as emergency services are searching for a child after he was swept into water while swimming at a Port Macquarie beach this afternoon.
About 1:30pm, an 11 year old boy was swimming with family in shallow waters at Lighthouse Beach, when he was swept into a rip and disappeared in the water.
He has not been seen since.
A 17 year old boy was also caught in a rip but managed to get to shore.
Emergency services were called to the location including officers from Mid North Coast LAC.
A search is underway and local police are being assisted by the Westpac Rescue helicopter, Surf Lifesaving Australia, Water Police, and Marine Rescue.
According to NSW Police, the search is ongoing and there is no further information at this stage.
