SES Week Calling For Gracemere Volunteers

SES Week Calling For Gracemere Volunteers

It's SES week and volunteers are needed for Gracemere! Rockhampton Regional Council hope the stories shared in SES week will inspire people to join up.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Councillor Tony Williams, said SES volunteers made a huge difference in our region but that more were needed, particularly in Gracemere.
“Volunteers play a vital role not only during the dramatic time that a disaster hits, but also in ensuring we can be as prepared as possible beforehand to minimise any potential disruption.
“You get some amazing training, and the skills you learn – like first aid and flood boat operation - will stay with you for life.
“Being part of the SES is an exciting and rewarding way to give back to your local community, and I would urge anyone reading to get in touch or go along to a meeting to find out more.”
Gracemere SES Group Leader, Leon Burt, said local SES volunteers had shown great dedication to their communities during recent severe weather events, but more volunteers were needed.
“SES Week is a great opportunity for people who want to give back to their community to get involved, and join the SES,” Mr Burt said.
“We currently have around 25 active SES volunteers who volunteer in the Gracemere SES group. They volunteer their time to ensure our communities remains safe and have a swift recovery after disaster strikes.
“We’re looking to recruit another 10 volunteers ahead of storm and cyclone season to help lighten their load.”
Rockhampton Regional Council Local Controller, Eddie Cowie said, “SES groups need people who will commit to attend training and are physically capable of preforming regular SES functions like helping tarp roofs, search for missing people or assist with evacuating an area.”
“Education and training is provided to all volunteers and I encourage interested residents to attend their local group’s training night to find out more.”
