Sharks Found Speared At Umina Beach

UPDATE 12PM:

The Department of Primary Industries is looking into whether foul play was involved, after two sharks were found dead on Umina Beach yesterday.

A spokesperson's confirmed the animals were dusky whalers, and not grey nurses as earlier reported.

Dusky whalers can be legally taken subject to local rules, and the DPI will look into whether anything illegal has occurred, after claims they were found speared near Kiddies Point around 2pm.

FULL STATEMENT FROM THE DPI:

"NSWDPI identified sharks found speared at Umina as dusky whalers, not grey nurse sharks.

"Dusky whalers can be legally taken subject to local rules, and there is a bag limit of one per person.

"NSWDPI fisheries officers will continue to look into whether any illegal activity occurred.

“NSW DPI promotes responsible fishing practices at all times and encourages recreational fishers to dispose of all litter and fish waste responsibly.”
