One person - believed to be a male - has died following a serious two car crash at Magenta this morning.

Emergency services rushed to the Wilfred Barrett Drive scene after getting the call around 11:10am.

Rescuers have been working to free a further three elderly people who were injured in the wreck.

CareFlight and Westpac choppers are on their way.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the area for at least the next few hours, closing the road between The Entrance North and Norah Head.

Motorists are being diverted via Wyong Road, the Pacific Highway, Wallarah Road and Main Road in each direction.

Additionally, route 21 and 29 buses are not running.

Fourteen people have now died on local roads this year, three of them in the last 10 days alone.
