A campaign is underway to get what is believed to be the Central Coast's first ICU for native baby animals.

Umina wildlife rescuer Clare is raising cash for a device known as a humidicrib, which will help out animals like kangaroos, possums and microbats.

There is a rush to get $1300 before the main breeding season kicks off in November.

“I’m trying to get it earlier, we are getting possum and kangaroo joeys in at the moment unfortunately from roadkill when checking pouches,” Clare said.

The device better regulates heat and moisture for a wider variety of animals fighting for life in their infancy, compared with her current setup.

“At the moment I am using a reptile glass enclosure but it’s not as great as one of these [humidicrib] units.”
