NSW Police are investigating reports of a fake doctor who was working at a major Sydney hospital.

It's alleged the 27-year-old woman lied about her qualifications while working as a doctor at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital since January.

It’s believed the 27-year-old failed her final exams and allegedly faked required documents for the role.

The hospital made the discovery on Monday that the woman was not registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), after working with the hospital for eight months.

The hospital released a statement that the woman had been working as a trainee doctor and was fully supervised during her time at the hospital.

A health spokesperson has confirmed that the woman has been removed from her duties and the matter has been referred to NSW Police.

The Bankstown-Lidcombe hospital has also launched an internal investigation and reported the incident to AHPRA.
