Central Coast police have been left pretty disappointed following the weekend's high-visibility drink and drug driving operation.

Senior Sergeant Rob Lawson says they conducted 5777 random breath tests and caught 41 motorists drink driving between Friday and yesterday.

That works out to be a rate 7 times higher than the state average.

"If you don't get caught, the flow-on effects to your family and friends is just horrific, it's something they'll never get over. If you do get caught, going through the court process can be a life-changing experience, and there are huge costs involved in that, effects on future work and visa applications," Senior Sergeant Lawson.

"I don't think people understand the consequences of getting a criminal conviction for a traffic offence."

While the number of speeding offences recorded during Operation Drink Drive 2 were comparable to recent operations.

Coast police also laid 24 criminal charges for other offences during the operation, including on a Long Jetty man who allegedly hasn't held a licence since 1985.

Officers from the Joint Traffic Task Force were conducting random breath testing on Tuggerah Parade at Long Jetty on Saturday when the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system detected an unregistered vehicle. A roadside breath test returned a negative result.

Inquiries at the scene revealed the man had not held a licence since 1985 and his car had been unregistered for seven years.

The 72-year-old man was charged with being an unlicensed driver (never held) and drive unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

He will appear in Wyong Local Court on November 26.
