A Charmhaven business has been fined $45,000 after two young workers were sent to hospital while cleaning part of a naval ship.

A court’s ordered Central Coast Metal Protectives to pay up after the men, aged 19 and 20, were given inadequate protection in a confined space with thinners.

Fumes reportedly left the duo vomiting and disorientated.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean says it could have been far worse though.

“The workers had no specific training for working in confined spaces,” Minister Kean said.

“They had no ventilation and entered the pontoon with malfunctioning and inadequate protective equipment.”

While the Minister has warned against companies taking advantage of young workers, saying they must always receive the right training and supervision to stay safe on the job.
