Avoca Theatre gets green light

The controversial re-development of the iconic Avoca Beach Picture Theatre has been given the go ahead by the Land and Environment Court.

Commissioner Susan O'Neill yesterday ticked off on the $7.2 million dollar extension...with the determining factor being that Avoca doesn’t have a parking problem...and the theatre has no heritage significance.

The contentious issue has been raging on for well over a decade...as residents have fought against the proposal in the small beachside community, which had been rejected by the then Gosford Council.

The expansion will add another three cinemas, five residential units, a cafe and basement carpark, while retaining the original theatre.

The Avoca Beach Preservation Society says, while it disagrees with the court decision, it respects it, and wishes the owners, Norman and Beth Hunter all the best.
