There's nothing better on a hot day than a tasty ice-cream.
I remember when I was a kid, the only way to get that sweet creamy fix was to pick one up at the local servo. Or wait for Mr Whippy to swing by the street.
Well, how things have changed!
Canberra's now got an abundance of choices for ice cream lovers, however which way you like it.
And with the ridiculously hot weather, we thought we'd compile a list of where to get the best ice-cream in the capital.
5 - Cold Rock
Choose it. Mix it. Smash it. Love it. That's Cold Rock's motto! With stores in Dickson, Belconnen and Gungahlin, you won't have to travel far to crush that craving! Firstly, you choose your favourite ice cream flavour, then staff mix your choice of lollies, chocolate, fruits and nuts, they smash your mix ins into the ice cream, then you can guess what happens next! Indulge.
4 - Stripey Sundae
Nothing beats the homemade stuff! Nestled in the quaint Gold Creek Village, this is a great place to satisfy your sweet tooth. Their flavours change with the seasons and can include salted caramel, liquorice, wattle seed as well as the old favourites like chocolate and vanilla. And did someone say peanut butter and jelly ice-cream?? Yum! They also offer yummy milkshakes, thickshakes, coffee, affogatos and iced coffee, as well as vegan, gluten free and dairy free options.
3 - Goodberries
This has to be my personal favourite. And I may be cheating a little with this one, as it's actually frozen custard, not ice cream. But you know what, it's so good, who cares! Similar to Cold Rock, you choose either chocolate or vanilla concrete, then go nuts with the range of lollies, chocolates, fudge and other delectable toppings to have mixed in. My usual - vanilla concrete with caramel fudge, violent crumble and banana. And a little tip - ask for it lightly mixed! There's stores in Belconnen and Erindale, so northsiders AND southsiders are sorted!
2 - Movenpick
Movenpick is a newer addition to Canberra's ice cream scene, and boy, is it delicious! The Swiss ice cream maker opened its doors at the Kingston Foreshore last year. There's something for everyone, including creamy ice creams, sorbets, on the go ice creams and more! With a focus on natural ingredients, Movenpick ice creams taste LEGIT, because they're free of artificial additives, flavourings and colourings. This is where you go to get REAL ice cream.
1 - Frugii Dessert Laboratory
Frugii in Braddon can be best described in two words. Dessert heaven. They have a stack of flavours to choose from, but personally, I reckon you can't go past the salted caramel. And the dark chocolate. And the vanilla bean. And the lemon sorbet. The list goes on! They also serve coffee, cake and other homemade sweet treats. Definitely a winner on all fronts.
Other special mentions go to Via Dolce in the city, Pure Gelato in Mitchell, Doms Gelato on Lake Burley Griffin, Bertoldo's in the Canberra Outlet Centre, Gelatissimo in Manuka and the city, That Gelato Place in Weston Creek, Ben and Jerrys at Hoyts Cinema in Woden, Baskin Robbins in Tuggeranong and San Churro in Woden.
So go forth Canberra ice-cream lovers, get your fix today!
