Would you take your own coffee cup to a café or sip on your favourite night-time beverage without a straw?

It’s a move more Canberra café’s and clubs hope locals get on board with – as they do their bit to help the environment.

Frankies at Forde recently announced from July 1, they’ll no longer use disposable coffee cups to save thousands of cups from ending up in landfill.

The move has attracted a range of responses, mostly supportive.

Some raised concerns about what the extra use of detergent will do to the environment, whether the cost of coffee would change and potential job losses.

But Frankies countered those concerns – saying ultra-hot water is used to clean the cups instead of detergent, those who bring their own cup get a 50c discount and no jobs would be cut.

The popular Mr Wolf nightclub also recently announced their own plan to combat pollution.

As of this weekend, they’ll no longer serve straws to help cut down on unnecessary plastic pollution.

The move also attracted loads of supportive comments on Facebook – with plenty of criticism also.

Some suggested it was a cheeky way of boosting profits, to which Mr Wolf replied “for anyone thinking we’re going this to increase our profit margin we’ll be saving roughly $7.50 per week on the cost of straws, this really doesn’t make much of a difference to us.”

What do you think of these moves? Do you know any other local places doing something similar? Have your say at our Facebook page!
