Police are urging Canberrans to be vigilant following reports of door to door scammers doing the rounds in the northside.

Several incidents have recently been reported of scammers offering services like painting house numbers on driveways, or general house and garden maintenance.

In December, police were called to a Dickson home, after one of the culprits had been hassling the resident.

The man had painted numbers on the driveway without discussing it with the resident and was refusing to leave without payment.

Officer in Charge of City Police Station, Sergeant Jason Kennedy, stressed the importance of being wary, warning vulnerable Canberrans.

“If a person attends your house unexpectedly offering services such as painting or garden maintenance be clear you are not interested in their service and ask them to leave your property, or contact police on 131 444. Do not let the person inside your house,” Sergeant Kennedy said.

“I urge everyone to warn their neighbours, family and friends to be vigilant and to know what to look for. We are a community and we need to look out for one another and report suspicious activity to police.”

Anyone who sees suspicious activity in their neighbourhood is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
