He’s the man who’s stolen the hearts of Canberrans and many others around the world.
Gold Logie winner Samuel Johnson is in Canberra, ready for the Australian of the Year awards tonight!
Canberra claimed Samuel after falling in love with his sister Connie, who passed away late last year after a lengthy cancer battle.
Samuel’s ramped up his fight against cancer, vowing to raise $10 million in Connie’s honour.
Samuel said the family’s doing pretty well.
“We’re as well as can be expected. Don’t forget that we’re the most cushioned cancer family in the country. The boys are doing well. They’ve not known life without the traumas of cancer so there’s a certain liberation there in that the trauma’s over.”
The cancer crusader arrived in Canberra yesterday, ahead of a jam-packed schedule.
““We go to Parliament House, to the Lodge, to the Museum, we even get a selfie with the PM and do breakfast with Mr Turnbull,” he said.
“There’s a lot of hoo haa, the Governor General plays a fairly major role and the PM’s not just at one thing, he’s at quite a bit of it. So I’m just hoping that I can find a chance to give him a big hug!”
Samuel said while he doesn’t think he’ll win Australian of the Year, all the nominees are preparing for the best.
“I found out that I was Victorian Australian of the Year about three months ago and I’ve been sweating on the speech for that long and I finished it yesterday,” he said.
“I’m gonna have a ball regardless but if we get lucky it is most certainly one for Canberra you can be sure of that.”
Goodluck Sam! We wish you and all the other nominees the best for tonight!
