Just a couple of days after Canberrans found out they’ll be hit with more rate rises, locals have been dealt another blow.

As of July 1 this year, electricity prices will go up by 18.95%.

For a typical Canberra household, that’s an increase of about $333 in their annual bill, or about $6.40 a week.

The hike has been put down to a range of factors, including poor national leadership on the issue.

To try to ease the financial burden, the ACT Government will provide matched funding of $250,000 to an Energy Support Fund set up by ActewAGL for customers who may struggle to cope with the price hikes.

The fund will enable community groups to distribute energy vouchers to families in need.

That’s on top of existing measures to help struggling Canberrans, with discounts of up to $600 per year available to eligible concession card holders.

Despite the increase, ACT households and businesses still have some of the lowest power bills in the country, with Canberrans paying hundreds of dollars less than our interstate neighbours.

That news, however, may be little consolation for those in the ACT who’ll struggle to pay their bills.
