It’s the news many people have been waiting for, for months.
Results of the much-anticipated same-sex marriage postal survey will be announced at 10am on Wednesday, and there’s plenty happening in Canberra to mark the occasion.
There’ll be a gathering at Haig Park from 9am tomorrow with a picnic and live music, in the lead up to the announcement.
There’ll also be a street party from 5pm at Hopscotch, with part of Lonsdale Street to be closed from 6pm.
Regardless of the result, people are encouraged to join in solidarity and help chalk the street rainbow!
“If the Facebook events are anything to go by, we’re expecting a couple of hundred at each event. But if a yes vote comes through, we can expect even more in the evening,” Australian Marriage Equality ACT organiser, Jacob White, said.
He hopes tomorrow’s events will have a celebration focus.
“This has been a long campaign for our community and the last few months have been really tough. I think at the end of the day regardless of the result, people are going to want to be with their friends and people they know and some familiar faces.”
“The main thing will be getting everyone together and making sure they’re in a warm and welcoming environment and marking the occasion appropriately.”
If it is a yes result, Jacob hopes the Government will act swiftly and introduce a private member’s bill.
