Police are still on the hunt for the culprit who shot a kangaroo with an arrow and left it to die in a Canberra yard.

ACT Parks and Conservation received several calls about the incident last week.

The kangaroo had a little joey in its pouch, but sadly, both had to be euthanised.

Compliance Manager with the ACT Parks Service, Craig Jones, said it’s a horrific attack.

“Unfortunately, our rangers all too often have to respond to wildlife being shot with arrows. About 12 months ago we had an emu at the lower Cotter catchment that had an arrow in it that was still alive,” he said.

“It’s completely unacceptable and the Government will take strong action if we find people that are responsible.”

Mr Jones said they haven’t had many people come forward with information.

“We do rely on information from members of the public to prevent these things from happening. If people do have any information about this if they can contact Access Canberra on 13 22 81,” he said.

“Very serious penalties apply for these under the Animal Welfare Act. Aggravated cruelty attracts serious penalties of up to two years imprisonment and significant fines.”

The investigation is ongoing.
