Wait – is it winter already?

That’s the question many Canberrans have been asking as the capital shivers through a cold snap.

Canberra copped 13mm of rain since 9am Sunday with strong winds and hail in some parts.

It was a winter wonderland at our ski fields too, with Perisher and Thredbo receiving about 20cm of snow.

“It’s starting to warm up above freezing so the snow is now turning to rain and the existing snow will melt fairly quickly, a lot will melt during the afternoon while some may refreeze overnight,” Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said.

“Temperatures were around minus two minus three degrees during the middle of last night during the heaviest snowfalls, so pretty cold, but not as cold as it can get in winter time.”

As for whether we’ll see more snow before winter actually hits..

“There is likely to be more, maybe not as plentiful in terms of snow but there’s guaranteed to be a few light dustings of snow between now and winter,” Mr Dutschke said.

Canberra’s expecting a top of just 15 degrees on Monday with more rain expected, before climbing to 21 on Tuesday.
