CCTV footage has been released of that violent robbery in Canberra's south that left a man with several stab wounds.

About 2:30am on Sunday the 18th of December, a man threatened staff at the Calwell Club with a weapon and demanded two women and a security guard get down on the floor.

One staff member was forced to the ground and the culprit tried to take the other hostage.

Security stepped in, then the offender took off.

Security and a brave patron chased him, before the patron caught the culprit in nearby parkland, prompting a scuffle, during which the patron was stabbed several times.

The victim was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The male offender's described as 180cm tall and of medium build.

He was wearing a balaclava, dark coloured hoodie and light blue jeans.

Police are still investigating.

Anyone with information, or who may have seen any vehicle near the Calwell Club at the time, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
