A van loaded with gas bottles that ploughed into the Australian Christian Lobby offices in Canberra has caused major damage.
The explosion happened around 9:30pm last night, leaving smashed windows and damaged furniture.
The 35 year old driver took himself to Canberra Hospital, where he’s being treated for serious burn injuries.
After speaking with the man, police are confident his actions weren’t politically, religiously or ideologically motivated.
But police are still investigating the incident, including previous threats to the Christian Lobby.
Meanwhile, Lobby CEP Lyle Shelton said he’s shocked something like this could happen in Australia.
“This is truly very confronting. This is not the Australia I grew up in. I never thought I’d see a car bomb attack on a political advocacy group in this country in my lifetime,” he said.
“Someone out there obviously doesn’t like what it is that we have to stand for which are the values that are shared by millions of Australians, and were seeking to intimidate us with this attack,” he said.
ACT Policing Deputy Chief Police Officer Mark Walters has reassured the community, there is no concern for public safety.
“Police are conducting a thorough investigation and there is no threat to public safety. We want the Canberra community to go about their business today reassured that ACT Policing is working to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Commander Walters said.
Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
