Some bad news for those fed up with the heat, there’s no relief in sight just yet!
Canberra’s expecting more scorchers, with the capital set to swelter through its hottest week since 2014 from Wednesday.
Weatherzone Meteorologist Joel Pippard said we’ll see those hot temps continue today.
“Both yesterday and today we’re expecting Canberra to be the hottest capital and that trend is actually going to continue all the way to Wednesday,” he said.
“Today we’re looking at a top of 37 degrees and it’ll slowly start to cool over the next few days. We’re looking at a top of 36 degrees tomorrow and 35 on Wednesday. Canberra is experiencing a severe heatwave at the moment.”
The heatwave is affecting night time temps too, so you might need to fire up an extra fan!
“Last night was roughly around 19 degrees and we’re expecting humidity to start to increase tonight, so we’re expecting a minimum of 20 degrees tonight. Compared to average, that’s about 4 or 5 degrees above average,” Mr Pippard said.
There’s also a chance of thunderstorms when humidity increases tomorrow.
“Probably around 40% chance of a thunderstorm or a shower, also on Wednesday that chance remains. It becomes a bit more likely as we move into Thursday and Friday where we’re expecting to see probably 5 to 10 millimetres of rain is likely.”
Meanwhile, paramedics are urging Canberrans to take extra care in the hot weather.
They’ve issued the following tips to avoid heat stress:
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or caffeinated drinks, as they can further dehydrate you.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Wear a hat as well as loose, long-sleeved shirts and loose-fitting trousers wherever possible.
- Stay in touch with your elderly and frail relatives and neighbours. Also, pay special attention to the health needs of babies and young children who can be badly affected by the heat.
- Never leave children or pets in cars. The temperature inside a car can rise dramatically in a very short period of time.
- Watch out for the symptoms of heat stress, including headaches, dizziness, nausea and even muscle or abdominal cramps.
- Don’t hesitate to call 000 if you or someone you know is suffering serious heat stress.
