Brumbies fans, players and staff breathed a sigh of relief this morning as the ARU confirmed, the Canberra club is safe and won’t be cut from the Super Rugby competition.

“Whilst we were confident the Brumbies would remain in the Super Rugby competition we weren’t taking anything for granted,” Brumbies CEO Michael Thomson said.

“With that in mind it’s gratifying to be able to get confirmation that the future of the Brumbies is safe and secure.”

The Brumbies are now focused on what lies ahead, with a new coach to replace the departing Stephen Larkham to be announced within the next month.

“We are continuing our contract negotiations with current players and the recruitment of any identified targets for next season and beyond and will be able to make some significant announcements shortly,” Mr Thomson said.

Meanwhile, Brumbies Head Coach Stephen Larkham is looking forward to the club’s push towards wining the Australian conference title.

“Having the uncertainty over the future of the Brumbies cleared up is certainly a positive result for everyone involved with the club,” he said.

“Whilst the players and staff have focused on being the best team we can be rumours and counter-rumours that have circulated around the decision have been a distraction. It will be great to concentrate solely on winning the Super Rugby competition in 2017.”

One Australian team will still be removed though, when the competition reverts to a 15-team, three conference format in 2018.

A decision will be made after consultation with two teams – the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels.
