Passenger Shannon Watts was at the gate at Denver, waiting to board a flight, when she witnessed the strange incident and started tweeting about it.
The airline went into damage control, defending the decision on Twitter.
United Airlines clarified, the passengers were “pass travellers” – employees or members of their family who fly at a discounted rate.
The incident has blown up on social media, attracting criticism from people far and wide, including actress Patricia Arquette.
It’s understood, the girls were eventually allowed on the plane, after getting changed.
