It’s nearly that time of year when Canberrans brave the dark and cold to see giant balloons inflate and take off from the lawns of Old Parliament House.

Two new balloons will make their Aussie debut when the Canberra Balloon Spectacular kicks off from Saturday – a Smurf balloon from Belgium and a Hummingbird balloon from the United States.

Held over nine days, pilots begin laying out and inflating their balloons from 6:15am each day before taking to the Canberra skies – creating a stunning back drop to our national attractions.

You’ll remember the controversial Skywhale – unfortunately we won’t see that beauty this year.

But there’ll be stacks of other balloons from around the world, with more than 40 taking part in the festival.

To top off the experience, the Belconnen Lions Club puts on a hot breakfast every day on site!

Keep an eye on the Events ACT Facebook and Twitter pages for daily updates – as the balloons will only take off if weather permits.

And make sure you don’t forget your camera!
