A multi-million dollar theme park proposed for the Sunshine Coast, set to rival Queensland's iconic water parks, has been given council approval.

Dubai-backed Sanad Capital are the company behind 'Sunshine Park', a state-of-the-art water park to be built along Steve Irwin Way, that will include a four-star hotel, a wave machine, pools, slides, kayaking, paddle-boarding and water jet packs, plus a large sports field for major sports events.

Stage one has the green light and will be built over Glenview, which is estimated to cost almost $100 million.

Construction is expected to begin within the next 12 months.
