Queensland's Opposition has launched a petition calling for the Palaszczuk Government to build a second M1 linking Brisbane with the Gold Coast.
LNP leader Tim Nicholls made the announcement today, directing members of the public to his online petition.
“With only a single dual land bridge over the Pimpama, Nerang and Coomera rivers accidents mean the M1 is a parking lot within minutes, demonstrating clearly that an alternative is needed,”
The road would use a 36km gazetted land corridor between Stapylton-Jacobs Well Road at Stapylton and Nerang-Broadbeach Road at Nerang.
All up, the four-lane road would cost around $500 million.
At this stage, though, Nicholls has stopped short of committing to actually build the stretch.
“Under an LNP Government, something like this is much more likely to happen,” he said.
The Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk says Queenslanders deserve to know how they plan to fund the project.
“They’ll have to say what assets they plan to sell to do that,” she said.
