Gold Coast shoppers and workers are currently trapped in buildings after the power was cut to around 11 thousand homes and businesses.
Energex said its rapid response crews are on the job, with up to ten sent to Broadbeach after the sub station failed before 5:00PM.
A spokesperson asked residents to steer clear of suburbs including Broadbeach, Mermaid, Clear Island Waters and Surfers Paradise until the issue is resolved as many sets of traffic lights have been knocked out.
Staff from Oasis Tower Two tell us that they are stuck because their lifts aren't currently functioning.
Firefighters and Paramedics have been called. Police says they have been notified about the many power outages and are responding.
The Gold Coast Bulletin reports that shoppers are also trapped in Pacific Fair, with automatic sliding doors closing, trapping people in some shops.
We called Pacific Fair's centre management team and the phone diverted to security. The security officer who answered said there was something going on and he couldn't comment further.
Close to 8,500 are still waiting to have their power re-connected.
The Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed that they and fire crews had been called to Albert Avenue amid reports smoke was pouring from a building. The power outage struck after that.
