Bendigo V/Line commuters stand to save around 30 minutes on their travel time to Melbourne Airport following Sunday's announcement by the state government.
Up to 5 billion dollars has been committed to the Melbourne Airport rail link project by the Andrews Government - on top of the 5 billion already promised by Canberra.
Labor also revealed their preferred route of the 4 options - which would see the line travel up to Sunshine station then along the Albion West rail passage to the airport.
The Bendigo/Echuca line currently runs through Sunshine station without stopping, but the creation of a super transport hub would see passengers able to board a train directly to the airport.
Early analysis by Transport For Victoria is showing the project would cost in the 8 to 13 billion dollar range because tunnelling would be required to save homes and was rated 4.3 out of 5.
Construction on the project would begin by 2022 and Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan says the preferred route is a victory for regional commuters.
"This is really maximising and leveraging the investment that will be made in connecting the airport and this will see Sunshine become a major transport hub," Allan said.
"It is a logical location for this rail link to go through as it provides the wonderful connection into the regions and into the suburbs."
