The Australian Electoral Commission’s announced the Central Goldfields Shire will be moving to the federal seat of Mallee when the final boundaries are drawn out next month.
The vote comes despite more than 20 residents and groups including council, the Committee of Maryborough and Nationals Party submitting objections to the proposed move.
Council administrators have previously said believe would disadvantage them in attempting to get federal Mallee MP Andrew Broad’s attention for funding given Maryborough is over 400km away from his office in Mildura.
The AEC saying a move back Division of Bendigo or Ballarat would result in undesirable outcomes elsewhere in the state despite strong community support.
Data from the 2016 Census showed the Central Goldfields shire is the most socioeconomically disadvantaged municipality in Victoria.
