The McGowan Labor Government has moved swiftly to honour its election commitment to support a trial of the Ice Breakers program in Albany to help methamphetamine addicts to recover from their addiction.

In Albany today, Premier Mark McGowan announced that $360,000 would be provided to the Albany PCYC to carry out a two-year trial.

The Ice Breakers program supports meth addicts to move from dependence into recovery.

It has successfully helped hundreds of participants across the State to beat their addiction and has experienced significant demand, with nearly 4,000 hours in voluntary service delivery to people addicted to meth.

The McGowan Government’s Methamphetamine Action Plan includes a focus on support services that cater for long withdrawal and recovery periods and high relapse rates associated with meth use.

Today’s announcement follows the introduction of new laws that will increase the maximum penalty for meth traffickers to life imprisonment.

The premier has this to say:

“This is an important announcement for the Albany community and I’m pleased the McGowan Government has been able to fast-track funding for Ice Breakers.

“Meth addiction has a devastating impact on regional communities and I know many Albany families have been torn apart as a result of the drug.  Families are desperate for better services to help their loved ones beat their addiction.

“We are committed to a multi-faceted approach to dealing with the meth crisis confronting our State.

“Our Methamphetamine Action Plan will focus not just on prosecution, but also prevention, treatment and rehabilitation and that’s why we will continue to support programs such as Ice Breakers.

“We will work with stakeholders in Albany to develop a targeted program of recovery for those affected by the scourge of meth.

“I thank the Albany PCYC and Albany MLA Peter Watson for their tireless efforts to assist local families dealing with addiction.”
