It’s no secret that Australia loves big stuff, whether it’s a banana, a pineapple, a prawn or a merino. Now, it’s been announced a new monument is being built with a little more meaning behind it.
The Gilles Plains and Hampstead RSL has had their $150,000 proposal for the construction of The Big Slouch Hat greenlit by the State Government.
Speaking on Sunrise, RSL Branch Secretary Pat Sorbel explained that they were looking for a way to provide shelter for ceremonies where crowds were either standing out in the harsh sun or hit by rain and needed coverage.
Pat revealed that RSL member and Port Adelaide Councillor Mark Brashem came up with the idea of erecting a giant slouch hat and they hope it will be up in time for ANZAC day 2018.
Pat has also approached the Department of Defence in hopes of building an orion propeller and an anchor as well to represent the other services.
The Big Slouch Hat will be funded with the grant money from the Fund My Neighbourhood scheme.
