Without living on baked beans!

How To Travel On A Shoestring Budget Anywhere In The World

There's nothing wrong with being a budget consciousness traveler!

In fact, the explorers of the world that keep their bottom line in check, will often find themselves traveling more often, for longer and immersed in the culture of a destination.

We've teamed up with our friends at Gold Coast Airport to discover how to travel on a shoestring budget anywhere in the world, that doesn't involve eating canned beans or skipping the must-dos.

Hunt For Accommodation

If you're willing to forgo the luxury of a 5 star hotel, then you'll become pleasantly surprised that it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to be surrounded by 5 star comfort, location and cleanliness.

From motels, backpackers, guest stays, B&B's and private rentals - it's time to get savvy with accommodation! Couch surfing it the ultimate money-saver when travelling abroad if you're up to it! Home stays are also the perfect way to meet locals and save a penny.

And remember: Always research BEFORE you go the best and safest locations for you to lay your head before you book. No one wants to be too far away from the action.

Don't Just Jump In A Cab

It's always the easiest and quickest option when you're unfamiliar with an area, to hop a cab or Uber around town. Not only does it add up ($$), but has a limited view of the surroundings!

Once you've arrived at your location, the first thing you should do is find out how to get around. Ask your accommodation provider on the nearest train, tram or bus stop. Another thrifty way to get around town is on a bike. Hit the pavement by riding or walking around town - you'll be surprised how many coffees you can pay for with that extra cash.

Eat Like A Local

You don't need to splurge on fine dining to get your foodie fix. Most hostels have a kitchen so you can always cook a meal yourself (Even one home cooked meal a day will save you some dosh). If this sounds like you, look out for markets rather than big chain supermarkets and while you're there - fill up on some basic snacks like nuts to keep you going for longer during the day.

If you're not the culinary genius, then look for long lines where ever you go and keep an eye out for street vendors. Chances are, THAT is where the locals hang out and serve up big meals for a fraction of the cost.

The golden rule: Always, always, always, avoid the overpriced tourist restaurants in busy site seeing areas!

Free Fun Everywhere You Look

Walk around the city and 9/10 you will unintentionally hunt down some fun. Look around you and soak up the ambiance - it's often more fun then an organised activity.

BUT if organised fun is what gets your excited, then most cities around the world have free activities that are run by the council, library, churches or government. It's also a chance to meet locals and learn a new hobby!

Keep An Eye On Your Money

Start by downloading the app to your bank provider. This ensures you're always one click away from seeing how much you've spent. And check it daily, because it's very easy to underestimate how much you're spending until you're account hits zero...

Getting an app like Trail Wallet will also help. You can enter your budget for the day and track it by plugging in the amount of each receipt you get along the way. This will keep you accountable and notified when its time to tighten your belt or when it's safe to splurge a little.
